Markets
of the Americas - Berkeley,
California

The Monterey Market is about as close
as it gets to the old, traditional food markets of Europe. This is a place
where you can get it all and even at reasonable prices. Berkeley is
also home to the Berkeley Bowl which has produce pretty much as good as that of
the Monterey Market and adds meat, fish, etc. to form a hypermarche.
In some ways it reminds me of French
supermarkets which are still at the stage of imitating the real marches and
haven't reached stage two in which they substitute the white bread and processed
foods to a, by then, duped French public.

And, with ingredients such as those
from the Monterey Market and the Berkeley Bowl, one gets to do the kinds of
things that are known derisively to some as the 'mere assemblage of
ingredients'. Ah, but stuffing those Eightball zucchinis might
qualify as cuisine. Instead, we merely sauteed them (thickly-sliced) in
nice olive oil with big, thick slices of sweet onion and let them come to room
temperature before serving with some really nice Acme sourdough bread and lots
of nice California Pinot Noir.
